Prayer: How I spent my summer vacation

Dear God, Summer is here. And with it comes opportunities for more family vacations, outdoor café lunches with friends, picnics, walks in the park, ballgames, and bike rides. And… There are still those things that don’t go away… Work, laundry, deadlines, work, meetings, volunteer commitments, work, and house chores.  (Did I say work?) Please help me create the space and time to use these summer months to focus on things that matter most. Activities that reconnect me to the people most important to me. Taking time to re-energize my

A subsequent workout changed her life. “I have always been an animal lover. My cat was sick and I took her to the vet, and the care and compassion I saw there really got me thinking,” Billings said. “Then one day I was on a treadmill at the gym and saw a commercial for vet tech school. I thought, ‘I could do that.’

Bring in The Girlfriends

A theme that threads through my new book, God, Girlfriends & Chocolate, is… “…If that doesn’t work?  Bring in the Big Guns…Your GIRLFRIENDS.” As I was editing the book, I asked my husband Steve if “big guns” was too…I don’t know, too militaristic or too violent.  We took a few minutes to think of other words that could convey the same intensity.  What did he come up with? “…If that doesn’t work?  Bring in the Heavy Weights!” OK.  Really?  I laughed so hard.  (So did he.)  We

Our Words Matter

Children can say some pretty mean things, can’t they? “Oh, you’re stupid.” “You can’t be on our team.” “Nobody likes you.” Unfortunately, we adults say some pretty mean things too.  It just comes out differently.  Sometimes our hurtful words show up in statements of anger.  Other times they show up in gossip, behind-the-back conversations, or simply the sarcastic put-down.  And at other times the words we intend to be funny or witty cross the line, and nobody leaves the conversation feeling good about what was said.  Most

Please Erase Old Messages

[A note from Gaye:  Thank you for the guest post, Kelli Wommack!  Kelli and I are both speaking at The Refine Conference in September in Bloomington, MN.] I couldn’t do anything about it. I was in front of the room being interviewed with the rest of the women retreat speakers.  But, I heard it… …my cell phone. I had forgotten to put it on vibrate when the session started. Now, I was being asked about my family and my hopes for the weekend and all I could

I Follow Him

What does it mean to follow Jesus? I’m still discovering how the answer shows up in daily life…life has a way of giving us cues, doesn’t it?  We believe we’re on the right track – our heart is right with God – we are living in obedience.  And then something hiccups in our mind or our heart…and we know that our “following” has joined hands with “but I still need to take care of some things.” We know that following Jesus is more than reading the Bible

I Will Give you Rest

The months, weeks, and days between July 10, 2003 and April 12, 2005 had an imbalance of sadness and happiness, and weariness and rest for my sisters and me. We experienced dad’s brain hemorrhage, his home-going, mom’s heart attack and strokes, the sale of their home in Climax, and mom’s move to St. Paul, leaving the place they’d lived in for 50+ years. The dates of those events are no longer just squares on a calendar.  They represent moments that changed our lives.  There were, of course,

Taking Life for Granted

My friend Jeanette has had to say good-bye to her brother-in-law, brother, and her mother in the last 18 months.  Illness and death have been frequent visitors. We had a great catch-up conversation a few evenings ago, and she reminded me… “Gaye, remember to appreciate the people you love.  Take time with them.  Be grateful for every moment you share with them. You don’t know how many more conversations you can have.” This morning in church, our friend Tom commented on the beautiful sunny, winter day we’re
