If someone whispered to me right now,
There has to be more to life,
I’d whisper back,
You bet there is.
If those words feel familiar, know this: You aren’t alone. We’ve all got pillows who’ve heard some version of those whispers.
A couple of weeks ago, I spent a day with a group of women in Fond du Lac, WI. We talked about our lives—our hopes, fears, joys, and messes—and how we long to know God more. We want to experience everything he has for us on this side of heaven, embracing the surprises and joy that come from anticipating His goodness.
We considered what it takes to “…get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called us to travel.” (Ephesians 4:1).
And tucked behind every story told and Bible lesson remembered was this undeniable truth:
We can live a full life.
Jesus himself promised, “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
He keeps his promises.
God is in the full life business.
Not the getting by or good enough business.
You and I both know that this full life isn’t about comfort, or accumulating more things, right?
A full life is about knowing God, walking with Him, the promise of eternal life, and receiving all the blessings he has for us—love, joy, peace, and his presence, even in the hard times. A life filled with moments of exuberance, celebrations, His goodness—and naps!
THAT is a life of abundance.
If that full life feels out of reach right now, let me remind you of these truths:
“The Lord is my shepherd, I have all that I need.” (Psalm 23:1)
“He fills my life with good things.” (Psalm 103:5)
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work with us, to him be glory …” (Ephesians 3:20)
If life feels like a piece of clothing that just doesn’t fit—no matter how much you tug and stretch—then take a moment to ask yourself these three questions:
- Are you tired?
- Are you ignoring God?
- Are you bored? In a rut?
Be honest with yourself.
If you’re tired: Get some rest. The world won’t fall apart if you take a deep breath, a break, or even a nap. Nourish your body.
When Jesus said, Come to me and I will give you rest,
I think that included naps.
If you’re ignoring God: Pay attention. He’s probably nudging you to do or say something uncomfortable. So do it.
You will never ever be settled in your heart and mind
when you’re running from God.
If you’re bored or stuck in a rut: Stop numbing your brain. Yes, it’s easier said than done, but you have control over how you spend your time. Make some changes. Let go of the old habits and make room for something new.
God never intended for you to live a listless, restless life
from the inside of a rut.
He wants you to live a full life.
The PEACE you’re looking for when you whisper phrases that begin with, I didn’t think … I wish … I want … can be found in Jesus. Trust Him.
So, take a step today—no matter how small—toward the abundant life God has for you. You bet there’s more to life, and it’s waiting for you to step into it.
I care about you.
God has really good things planned for us. Let’s not miss them.
