Grace in Real Life

I did better today.

Showing grace. Instead of frustration.

When I think about grace, I immediately go to the grace we hear about in church. The grace we read about in the Bible. The grace that captured my heart and told me that my life matters – in spite of my mess-ups.

It’s about the grace I receive.

It’s easier to think about God’s grace towards me…rather than me showing grace to others.
Because that’s the tricky part. Living it in the real world.

But today was better.

Caring for someone with short-term memory and cognitive challenges can be frustrating. It takes sooo much patience. {And I think I was in the chocolate line when they handed out patience!}

But you know?
So can raising little kids.
So can trying to have meaningful conversations with teenagers.
So can marriage. Families. Relationships.
So can working in a cubicle next to the person who Never. Stops. Talking.

We all have those places where we gather every single day, and frustration is part of the group.

What if we enter that space in grace? Offering the forgiveness, warmth, soft place to land, understanding, caring, that the other person’s soul wants and needs?

What if we choose grace instead of the rolled eyes or cold shoulder?
What if we choose grace instead of the sharp response or angry reaction?
What if we choose grace instead of the harrumphing and stomping and whining?

Grace is, by definition, unfair. We are giving or receiving something that is not deserved.

So how about we show up in that place and be the person who does not always need to be right?
Or be treated fairly?
Or get the final word?
Or need things done the way we want when we want it?

Our places would change, don’t you think?

So. I’m learning how to live grace.
Today I did better.
And because of God’s grace…tomorrow I will live grace again.
