Cheerlessness Is Not Invited

And, although the way be cheerless,
We will follow, calm and fearless.

Really? Is this what I want my faith walk to look like? Cheerless?
I don’t think so.
I mean, that is just downright…sad.

Those two lines from a hymn written in the 1700’s bug me.

Can living a life of faith be hard?  Yes.
Can there be days of discouragement?  Yes.
But cheerless?  No.

Cheerless seems so hopeless.  Despondent. Grumpy.
I imagine people wearing grey clothes, heavy boots, plodding down a grey sidewalk on a grey day, with no smiles. No emotion.
Just…cheerless.

I never want that to be the picture of my faith journey.

We don’t always show up as joy-filled and faith-filled Christians.
Well, let me say that differently…
I don’t always show up as a joy-filled and faith-filled Christian.

And that’s not right.
This wonderful, majestic, awesome, God that I love and follow, brings me promises of blessings.
His Grace and Mercy and Love give me HOPE.
He has promised me a rich and full life. There is nothing cheerless about that.

Oh, friends, life is filled with valleys and mountains. Sometimes we’re up, sometimes we’re down.
You might be pushing a boulder up a path right now, wondering how you’re going to take the next step. Or, you might be coasting down a path with the wind blowing your hair back with sunshine on your face.
Whichever path, keep your eyes on Jesus. Embrace the HOPE He promises.

“I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you.” No place for cheerlessness in that! (Hebrews 13:5)

Let’s look for the smiles that cross our paths today. Listen for the giggles.

Let’s look for those “This is livin’” moments. Cheerlessness will not be there!
