The Grace of the Present

The Amazon Prime van drove up slowly through our unplowed streets and I heard the snow scrunch under its tires. I’d been waiting for this day and its delivery, and I caught its early morning arrival from my office window. Somewhere, behind the van’s dark blue siding and the light blue smiling arrow, was the book I’d preordered weeks ago.

It had arrived.

As the driver cautiously shuffled back down the driveway, I grabbed the box from the front porch with a quick Thanks so much! Before he’d put the van in drive, the package was on the kitchen counter, and I had the box cutter out.

The cover of the book was even more beautiful than its Amazon picture presented. It was designed by the author herself.

I found myself sighing as I picked it up:

Peace is a Practice: An Invitation to Breathe Deep and Find a New Rhythm for Life by Morgan Harper Nichols.

Morgan writes in her preface:

As I looked back over my life, even though it was hard to see it at the time, I breathed through all those difficult moments, one inhale, one exhale at a time. Over and over, through the mountains and valleys of my life, I made my way through breath cycles, too many to count. The challenges I face made it difficult to be in the moment, and at the same time, I learned that just being able to breathe was a way into peace . . . and this was a miraculous thing [emphasize added].

This book does. not. disappoint.

Finding beauty in the present. Breathing deeply. Practicing peace.

Our hearts are attracted to those moments, aren’t they? I bet you can feel a slight tug in your body – a yes! that rises from your soul – just from reading the words. Me too.

I invite you to find your breath of fresh air, heart healing, new rhythm, and a refreshing presence of Jesus in Morgan’s words.

Even here, a new day is coming.
