When the World Seems Small

winter landscape through windowIt’s a big world out there, isn’t it?
But boy. Sometimes it just seems so small.

When my path seems covered with more thorny thistles than rose petals…
My view of the world shrinks.

When disappointments and sadness and anger fill up my space…
That space becomes very small.

Know what I mean?

Here’s how it can show up in my world…

When words hurt me, too many conversations with those closest to me are filled with how hurt I am.
When finances are tight, my thoughts are consumed with How? When? What if?
When the responsibilities feel too heavy, my focus is on the heavy.

In the tough times – in that valley – everything closes in and it’s hard to see beyond the bottom of that rocky mountain. My focus is on that thistle burr stuck on the bottom of my foot and the steepness of that mountain that seems too big to climb.

I’m learning, though.
That smallness is what I’ve created. It’s not reality.
The world around me is always big.

Maybe your world seems confining today?

The illness in your home…people at work who just don’t get it…the stack of bills…the pressure of just getting out of bed and showing up.

Or the deep grief of losing someone you love…saying goodbye…the recovery that seems so slow…the grandchildren that are struggling to find their way.

Everything seems to be closing in. The space is so small that it’s hard to breathe.

Oh, Dear Friend, may I encourage you…may I encourage us…to look beyond our tears and our fears and see what is good in the bigger world we live in. When we look up and over, we aren’t ignoring the reality we live in, we are simply looking at what else is touching our lives that is good.

A change of view changes our perspective, doesn’t it?

There is good in your world today.
Look for it.
You will see it.
