Starting Again with the Best Choice

Church banner - blog finalTasks that are good things to do.
Work that is important.
Responsibilities that others may depend upon.

My days are filled with them.

And yet…

When my head hits the pillow at night,
I’ve been asking myself…
Did I do the most important thing today?

When I look back over the last couple weeks,
my response has to be…
Not all the time.

My heart asked and answered the question in church on Sunday as we sang my favorite Confession:

Forgive me, Lord, forgive me,
For my heart has gone its way.
I ignored Your Word, I ignored Your children.
Please, Lord, forgive me. *

I ignored Your Word.

That word “ignored” grips my heart and reminds me that my choices are…mine.
No one else can take responsibility for how I spend my time…
…Where I put my daily focus.
What I do and what I don’t do.

And every once in awhile the excuses come too easily.

My Bible sits on my shelf while I “hit the ground running” so I can get everything done.
The few extra minutes of sleep will help me stay healthier.
My prayers are quick and self-focused because…I’m not sure why.

So, Lord…
Let’s start again.

My days are filled with lots of good things.  Good work.  Important choices.

But may I never let the “good” choices take time away from the “best” choice.

YOU and Your Word will be my priority.
I will choose to spend time in Your presence before the to-do list gets any check-offs.
My day will begin with You.

Because YOU are the Most Important Choice.
