Shards of Glass and Socks

Like shards of broken glass…
Words puncture. Angry glares cut. Conversations slash.
We clean up the bloody mess, stitch the tender wound, and hope the scar won’t show.

Broken bodies…
Broken minds…
Broken hearts…
Broken families…
Broken dreams…

Sons and daughters and moms and dads are forced into the chaos of triage and I wonder what else to pray. What else to do.
I move through the day begging God to reach my friends right where they are at.
Make the pain go away. Stop the sadness.

How do I pray? Pray more? Pray different?
The brokenness seems so unfixable and their hurt is overwhelming.

And then…
God sometimes speaks to us in unexpected ways, doesn’t He?

In the midst of my angst, frustration, and feeling of helplessness,
When my caring and compassion are turning into unhealthy fear and anxiety…

Mom’s socks bring the reminder.

We were having a short middle of the night conversation, and with her head peeking out from under her comforter, Mom said…
“I’m so grateful for my socks.”

Socks brought back from a hospital trip long ago that we had put on a few hours earlier because her feet were cold.
It was such a simple statement…
Of gratitude.

Gratitude hadn’t even been on my radar screen.
Worrying? Yes.
Thank you’s? Not so much.

Mom’s socks and her heart of gratitude took me away from the icy-ness of my friends’ cold, hard realities, and reminded me of  The One Who Warms. Soothes. Heals.

It was time to start thanking God for being smack dab in the middle of all these situations.

My requests and prayers before this God who loves us so much are important…
And now it was time to stop trembling about the situations and turn my attention back on HIM…
The One who is the source of all Comfort. Hope. Peace.

Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy.

The Lord gives strength to his people, the Lord blesses his people with peace.

You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy…

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble, Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
[Those are really tough disasters! AND He is faithful.]

Promises.
His promises.

Today is a new day.
I face it knowing that all the worrying in the world won’t fix broken bones, broken hearts, broken dreams.

But God can.
And He will.

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.
