Reset…Peek Over My Shoulder

Tree on winter lake smallThe four words jump out from the page.

It’s like they are written in bold, red font, twice the size of the words around them. With a yellow, neon flashing light behind the letters.

…be patient with everyone.

Really? Everyone? All the time?
How on earth…

{I was standing in the wrong line when they handed out patience.}

Today I’m writing this little note to me.
There is a heart-need deep within that needs a reset on patience.

So feel free to just peek over my shoulder as I journal a few Reset Thoughts

Yeah, sometimes people don’t show up the way you prefer.
And even more frequently, you don’t show up the way you prefer.

There are going to be moments of frustration in life…

Getting lost in downtown Minneapolis at rush hour when it is dark and rainy and those on bicycles are pedaling dangerously to miss the raindrops and you are oh, so late for the dinner.

The late night request from Mom to rub lotion on her calves and feet to stop the aching pain when you’re just trying to get the client report written.

Scheduling events and caretaking and meetings that never seem to get finalized because…oh yeah…everybody is really busy.

But you know, Gaye, could you keep these frustrations in a healthier perspective?
Yes, I think you can.

Getting lost…serving those you love so much…figuring out priorities…
That’s life.
And those life moments will always be there.

So all your huffing and puffing and murmuring and whining?
Not so attractive.
And they don’t change anything.

Life is not perfect.
People are not perfect.
And neither life nor people have making you comfortable as their primary objective.

So, dear Gaye…
You work hard. You try hard. And you want to do so much.
But…You don’t have to work, try, and do so much.

Thinking about those things that pushed your patience to the max the last couple days?
Maybe…just maybe…
You could take a moment and take a deep breath.

You will not be immortalized as a horrible person if you are late for the dinner.
(Don’t worry about what someone else might think of you.)

Putting lotion on your Mom’s legs takes only moments.
(Taking time to love someone takes time; take the time.)

And everyone is trying hard to create realistic schedules.
(It’s not always all about you.)

You can find a more peaceful way of entering these moments, Gaye.
Choose to breathe. Slow down.
Focus on what matters most.
Expect less from yourself and others.

Be patient. With everyone.
That includes you.
