My Own Sochi Moments

I’m guessing we won’t hear these comments from our Olympians in Sochi…

Do these ski pants make my butt look big?
Who’s bringing donuts to warm-ups tomorrow?
Gonna’ have me a big ol’ bowl of Haagen-Dazs tonight to celebrate the prelims.

Their strength, speed, tenacity, consistency, and discipline…
Impressive, to say the least.

My first skiing experience 30+ years ago was anything but.

After taking the chair lift to the top of a not-very-steep hill, I panicked. I didn’t get off the lift and started riding it back down.
Panicking again, I realized it looked pretty stupid to ride the chair lift down the hill, so I jumped off.
Landed on the roof of a small hut.

Trying to get off the hut’s roof with skis?
Not. Attractive. At. All.

My second attempt at conquering the downhill a few years later…Good grief.

It was a ski trip with a group of single friends.  I was more worried about looking like the Michelin Man than I was about getting back on skis.
Should have worried about the skiing.

After taking, oh, about 45 minutes to get down the not-very-steep hill, one of my friends took pity on me.  I spent the rest of the afternoon skiing behind him, my skis between his, my hands on his waist, my face between his shoulder blades.

So. Not. Cool.

But here’s what I’m noticing as I watch these gutsy, passionate U.S. representatives in Russia…

They’re working hard and they’re having fun.
This is an experience they will remember for a lifetime and they’re living every moment out loud.

I want to live my moments like that.

{Obviously, mine won’t be on the slopes.}

In my work, in my relationships, and even on the [very safe] treadmill, I want to enter my moments with passion and energy.

Caribou reminds us that Life is Short. Stay awake for it.

Yeah. That’s what I want.

At the end of the day, I want to stand on my little step-up exercise box, lift my 5 lb. weights above my head, and say, “Yes!”
Today I showed up and gave my moments everything I had.

Paul, a great leader of our church and encourager of our faith, wrote in a letter to his friend, Timothy…
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Yeah.
That’s what I want.
You too?
