There was nothing remotely fancy about the place of Jesus’ birth.
Stables are never voted “Cleanest place in the world to have a baby.” Wet, dirty straw. Snorting cattle and braying donkeys. No turned-down sheets on a bed; no little chocolate mint on the pillow. And you have to believe that Mary and Joseph would have loved a good, hot shower after a long, dusty, dirty road trip.
Seems rather messy, doesn’t it?
It was into this messiness that Jesus came.
Overnights in stables may not be part of our lives. But messiness certainly is. A medical diagnosis, strained or broken relationship, unemployment, forgetful parents, or a schedule that runs us ragged.
It is into this messiness that Jesus comes.
Hope comes with Christmas. Messiness happens, and life can sometimes feel tough. But it is the birth of this baby Jesus that brings Hope, and Peace, and Comfort into every single moment, no matter how messy the moment.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)
What a promise. Jesus meets us, right where we are. And when He meets us, Jesus brings us Peace.
What a wonderful Christmas gift.
