Let’s Dance!

lets-danceThe video and memory still make me smile.

One of my Facebook friends posted a YouTube video of a little guy—maybe five years old—dressed in pocketed blue jeans, pointed cowboy boots, a blue-and-white checkered shirt, and a white cowboy hat. He was line dancing with a group of adults. Oh, my word. The joy on his little face!

He was kicking and stepping and grape vining and toe tapping. Clapping with glee with a smile as big as a Texas ranch on his face.

Was he keeping up? Not quite. Was he getting the steps right? Not much of the time.
But he was there. Dancing. Experiencing the moment. Having a blast.

I get it. I’ve been in his boots.

A few weeks ago at a women’s retreat, a bunch of girls with great rhythm and really cool moves spontaneously decided to line dance late Saturday night. They knew what they were doing. They looked good. Not only did they know the steps, but they added the body movements that made them look with-it. Today’s definition of groovy. They had the special arm moves, spins, shakes and shimmies that were oh, so fun to watch.

When the country western music started and they started dancing, I stood at the edge of the room and thought, “I don’t want to be on the sidelines. I don’t want to just watch and wish. I want to be in on the fun—laughing and moving and not worrying about being right or good.”

I had no idea what they were doing. But I knew I wanted to try it.

I stepped when they kicked. Slid when they swirled. Hopped to the left when they went right. It wasn’t pretty. But it sure was fun.

Those women showed up with grace and laughter. I showed up with fear and trembling, which turned into accepting grace and sharing the laughter.

And just like the little guy with the cowboy hat, I had a blast.

It fits with how I’m thinking about life these days.
I want to create moments, not watch moments.

The next morning at our retreat, Sue Lennartson shared her cancer-battling sister’s message: DANCE. Don’t sit around and wait. Have fun. Move. Live life. TODAY.

So timely.

Yup, y’all.
I danced. Laughed. Shimmied and side-stepped with new girlfriends.
I created a fun moment and a fabulous memory.

So how about it …
How about if we keep living life while we still can?

Let’s move from sideline-spectator to moment-maker. Let’s not wait until we are good at something, or have it all figured out, or have our “ducks in a row” to invite moments of something new, a little laughter, and some fun, into our world.

Yes?
Yes.

Let’s be brave.
Let’s dance.
