God can restore what is lost

Following-up on Wednesday’s thoughts…

Imagine what it was like to be Job’s friends. Watching him lose so much. (What do you say to someone who has just lost ten children!)

We learn in the book of Job that the counsel and conversations Job’s friends provided were not always very helpful. I bet they thought they were doing the right things—trying to move Job through his grief. But they also wanted to help Job feel better so their upside down world could go back to normal. Their words and impatience were not what Job needed.

Job needed to see God. And he did.
“My ears had heard you but now my eyes have seen you” (Job 42:5).

I am reminded of this…
When I am walking with my friends through their pain, disappointment, or deep sadness, I am called to show up in love. I am not called to be God. As much as I’d like to “make it better” for them, I need to listen for God’s guidance to know how best to support them.

Sometimes God may use me to encourage them. Sometimes, to provide advice. Always, to love them.
I need to let them see God’s love in me…in the way God wants me to show up.

God, please help me to know what YOU want me to do, or who YOU want me to be to my Girlfriends when their worlds are upside down. Thank you for loving them a zillion times more than I could ever love them.

P.S. This story has a great ending…”After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before [14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, 1,000 donkeys, 7 sons, 3 daughters]…The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first…After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so he died, old and full of years.”
