Fret…fret…fret

One of my favorite TV moments was when Marlo Thomas (remember her—“That Girl!”) attended a cocktail party. Her boyfriend, Donald, (remember him?!) wasn’t going with her, and she was terrified of mingling alone. So she wove through the other guests in the spacious, elegant living room, murmuring under her breath, “Mingle…mingle…mingle…mingle…mingle…” She didn’t pay attention to what was going on around her; she just kept breathing that little mantra and tried to stay away from engaging in any conversation.

It reminds me of me.
But I replace “mingle” with “fret.”

Last Friday is a great example. I found myself aimlessly wandering through the kitchen and living room in the early morning. Not going anywhere purposefully, or doing anything intentionally,  just moving from sink to table to chair to counter.  My heart was a little anxious. No big worries, but little things on my mind that were making me feel rushed, unsettled, and worried. “Fret…fret…fret…fret…fret…”

“I need to finish that writing project.” “I need to get over and see mom.” “I need to get on that treadmill.” “I need to finish the ironing.” “I need to get the client work done.”

Do see a pattern here? So many, “I need to…” statements.
Fret, fret, fret.

So I did what I’ve done so many mornings before. I sat down. And I just started whispering, “Jesus…Jesus…Jesus. Please meet me here.” At that moment, I wasn’t even sure what I needed. But whatever it was, I was confident that Jesus would deliver it.

Because Jesus will always meet me where I am.

God tells me not to fret. Why? Because I don’t need to. He’s got everything under control. He is righteous, forgiving, just…AND…He wants us to delight in HIM. (I’ve learned that I can’t delight and fret at the same time!)

Psalm 37 tells us several times, ”Do not fret.”
Verse 8 says, “…do not fret—it leads only to evil.”

Isaiah 30:18 reminds us, “So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help.”  (NLT)

Tired of fretting? Me to.
So let’s replace those “need to’s” and “frets” with Jesus.
Let’s stop and invite Jesus into our moment.
He will meet us where we are.
