Back to the Basics

I’ve been up and out of my desk chair 763 times this morning and it’s only 9:00 a.m.

My head is spinning with thoughts about my life, questions about my faith, and I’m wondering “How should I then live?” My body just can’t sit still. The focus isn’t there. So much good and challenging stuff to be thinking about.

I feel like a jack-in-the-box that sits scrunched up and then gets wound up only to pop up and bobble its head and then sit back down again. Until the next wind up is done.

Ooftah.

Perhaps you’ve had moments like this? You have life questions that are asking for attention—some of them kind of a big deal. They aren’t going to go away quietly. And that’s a good thing.

But this moment in today isn’t giving you the space or the clarity to be still and listen, study, ask God about what He’s teaching you. We will have to create that time and focus soon…but not today.

So until we can set aside that time to dig deep into our souls, and while we’re sitting with these questions, how about if we go back to the basics. What if we set our hearts on simple truths that will ground us, sustain us, and keep us focused on what matters most as we listen for what God is teaching us…

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.

I think that sounds like a pretty good to-do list for today. And a great place to prepare to listen. (Just think about what our homes, our communities, and our world would look like if we really took this to heart?)

Love the Lord.
Love your neighbor.
