Life Over Chips and Salsa

Some of life’s most important conversations take place over chips and salsa.

(My first conversation with my now-husband Steve was on a blind date at Chi-Chi’s Mexican restaurant so that statement has been scientifically proven to be true.)

Most recently, La Casita Restaurant provided the aqua-and-coral colored wall tiles, hanging sombreros, and mariachi music that framed another life moment.

My friend, Stephanie, and I were catching up on our families, our faith journeys, and our businesses over a beef burrito, fish tacos, and chips and salsa (keep them coming, thank you very much). Talking about the things that mattered most to us.

I was struggling with questions about my business that were connected to my insecurities, life’s busy-ness, and distractions that took me away from getting to know God’s heart on the issues.  What am I supposed to do? How do I do it?  What if I can’t do it?

Stephanie’s advice was perfect.

Gaye, set aside all the details and questions that have you spinning.
Get yourself grounded again.
Make your relationship with The One Who Knows Best your highest priority.

Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Yes.

The verse Stephanie shared takes me back to Bible camp days.  {Does anyone else hear that pretty Alleluia descant in your head when you read those words?} It’s the best to-do list ever.

It’s one of the Bible verses we talked about around the campfire when tender hearts were saying “Yes” and God had never felt more real. And in high school when we were really thinking about what it meant to follow Jesus and wondering if “all these things” included finding a boyfriend.

And…it’s the verse to help figure out life’s next steps when Girlfriends encourage each other and contemplate what could be over chips and salsa.

{Reality check…}
It seems easier to just try and figure things out on our own, doesn’t it?  Develop the plan and put the action steps in place. Have it all laid out with target completion dates assigned before the server brings the check.

Seeking God requires me to be still. To let go. To listen.
And I’m more of a figure-it-out, get-it-done kind of gal.

But He. Knows. Best.

To trust The One Who Hangs The Stars…(and names them!)
Clearly, He is wiser and more powerful than I am.
I mean, really.

Our chips and salsa conversation is over, but the words shared are anchored in my heart.
Breathing is easier now.
Waiting for answers isn’t as hard.

Seek Him…and then the rest will fall into place.

If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
