Hope and the Early Morning Swirl

It’s in those early morning first-moments when we make one of the toughest choices of the day.

Do we swirl in the messiness and worries?
Or do we hope in what has been promised?

Here’s what it looks like in my world…
Before my eyes even open (or try and open during this allergy season!), I am thinking about the good things ahead of me in the next few hours. Work I enjoy and connections that encourage me. It’s going to be a good day.

And then…as if someone grabbed the clicker and changed the channel in my mind…
I start thinking about the messy things in life that worry me…the life worries that are bigger than the fact that my hair needs a color touch-up and I’m out of coconut milk. Why do these big-time worries have to still be here today?

That’s when I need to choose. With my head still on my pillow…

Do I let my mind race through the list of the things that are wrapped in disappointment, heartache, anxiety…the unknown?

Or do I let my mind rest in the fact that God is in every single one of those worries and my focus on His promises brings me back to peace…the known?

Some messy situations are with us for a while. When we lie down and when we rise.
We can’t change them, Friends.
The illness…the loss…the devastation…the sadness…we can’t control what’s going on.

What we can control is how we see them…what we do with our emotions. And how we let them influence our days.

Here’s what I’m learning…and it is making all the difference.
When the channel changes and the worry show starts…
I immediately choose to start thanking God for being there.

I whisper the words…
Thank for your wrapping your arms around my friend…thank you for loving my friend more than I can ever imagine…thank you for showing grace and mercy…thank you for caring so much about the situation…thank you for being right there with her in the midst of it…thank you for your promise to never leave or forsake…thank you for keeping your promises….

And as I’m focusing on The One Who Cares and Can Fix…
My channel returns to the regularly scheduled program.
The program filled with Hope for the day.

Our worries and frets will change our hearts and our outlook and how we walk through the day.  We will walk with them in messy anxiety and discouragement.

Our choice to remember God’s promises will also change our hearts and our outlook. We will walk in the peaceful Hope that God brings.

It’s in those first five minutes, My Friends.
Join me in making the right choice?

God will keep this promise to us…
You (God) will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
Psalm 26:3
