And God Smiled

This is a guest post by my friend, Shari McGuire.  Shari is a time management expert — and loves God!

And God smiled.

Recently, in light of some airline ticket fares that were purchased for significantly less than normal due to a computer glitch, I pledged on social media to do the right thing and not take advantage of a company mistake going forward. Even for something as small as a beverage that is missed on my restaurant check,.

And God wasted no time putting me to the test.

The very next day I was standing in the return line with a curling iron that needed to be exchanged. I bought the wrong sized barrel. When I purchased the curling iron I was issued a $5 gift card and I wondered if that would cause confusion during the exchange. It did.

During the exchange process, the cashier wanted to issue me a $5 gift card due to purchasing a new curling iron.
I pulled out my gift card from the original purchase and tried to explain that I already had a gift card from the original purchase.
He took the card and added $5 to the card.
I was speechless. I knew it was wrong to now have a $10 gift card.
I felt bad telling the cashier, “You’re wrong.” So I kept silent.
People were lining up behind me and would become impatient and frustrated if I took too long for my turn. So I kept silent.
And I walked away.
All the way to my car.

I couldn’t let go of it though.

So I trudged back in the store, took one look at the returns line that was now almost out the door and asked myself if it was worth it to make it right.
It was.

So in the line I stood and stood and stood.

Finally, it was my turn. The store manager decided it was too much of a hassle to reduce my gift card value and thanked me for my honesty.
And I thanked her and walked back to my car with a spring in my step.
I had done the right thing and it felt good.
And as my friend told me later, God smiled. I had passed the test.
